C H O C O B O S

Some things may change, but Chocobos are eternal. Final Fantasy XI naturally includes the big yellow birds we've all grown to know and love. To get a Chocobo, you go by the Chocobo stable in town (which is marked by a little sign with a Chocobo on it), but first you need a Chocobo-raising license.

Once you have that license and a Chocobo, you can go out and run around. Chocobos also have the ability to root in the earth for greens, which is useful in a couple of ways. For one, you need to feed your Chocobo to keep it happy and healthy. For another, they may dig up a hidden item when looking for food. When you're on soft turf or sand (they can't dig in hard earth), try and see what you can find.

Requirements to ride a Chocobo:

  • Must be Lv20 or above.
  • Must have 4 Grasses that are dropped by the Wadi Hare in Wadi.
  • Must go to the Chocobo Stable in Jeuno.

What to do:

  • In order to ride a Chocobo you must first obtain a license to ride one. You can obtain the license from the Chocobo stable in Jeuno.

  • You will need to get Grass from Wadi Hare located in Wadi. You will need 4 of these grasses.

  • You must now travel to Jeuno for the license. The only problem with that is getting there is the hardest part. Most likely you will be in the low level 20’s, so chances of getting there by traveling yourself will be around 1%. To overcome this challenge you should make a party. In your party, it is a good precaution to have a high level character included.

  • After getting to Jeuno, look at the map and it'll be marked as “Chocobo StableE(It will be to your right, down the stairs). Now you must feed the Chocobo the 4 grass you got from Wadi hare. To start doing this, you must first talk to Brutus.

  • Brutus will ask you two questions, for the first question choose the first answer, and on the second question choose the second answer. Now talk to Osker, who is close by, and Osker will tell you to get the Grass. Since you already have the grass, go to the menu and choose “TradeEfrom the menu and select the Chocobo that is right next to Osker. Now put just one of the grasses into the trade box and click the trade button. The Chocobo will make a squeal sound.

  • The first time, Chocobo will not eat the Grass. Now if you take a look at your bottom left it will tell you the Vana'diel time (Ex. 8:46), you must now wait until the next day. So wait until the time goes back to 0:00 (It does NOT have to be exactly 0:00. Any time the following day is okay).

  • The next day, try to trade the grass again. The second time it won't take it either. Now wait again until the following day. The Chocobo will start eating from the third day to sixth. So, the total of 4 Grasses will be used by the sixth day.

  • After feeding the last of the grass, you'll obtain your license!

Things you should know:

  • Chocobos are rented.
  • Chocobos get tired and when they do they will drop you off and leave.
  • They can only be ridden in field areas, not dungeon or town type.
  • Abilities, Items, nor Magic can be used while riding.
  • You cannot fight while riding. You can target monsters to track, however.
  • Healing actions, logging out, and temporarily going to the POL, and item trading are forbidden while on a Chocobo.
  • If your HP becomes 0 while riding, you are removed from the Chocobo. (Ex. Poison)
  • The area around you where you dig affects the possible items. (If you dig near water, you can get water-based items. Dig in a desert area, get earth based items, etc.)

  • One attempt to dig requires giving your Chocobo 1 Gisaru Fruit. DON'T WASTE THEM!
