Fortune sheep have appeared in almost every area around Vana'diel since 12:00 a.m. on January 1, 2003 in Japan.

They are arranged in one sequence by the order of "Fortune Ram", "Bless Ewe", "Merry Mary", "Happy Baabaa", "Lucky Lamb", and "Lucky Lamb". "Fortune Ram" acts as a fortuneteller when you trade an item, Gil (etc.) to it.

Also, support magic, such as Protect and Shell, are also cast simultaneously on your character if you talk to them. It is said that the item "Lucky Charm" may be rarely given, although the conditions are unknown.

Also, Square has added in two Mandragora's, Ake and Ome, as NPC's in every Kingdom. For all of you not familiar with Japanese, Ake and Ome are abbreviations for the words "Akemashite Omedeto" meaning "Happy New Year". I think we can safely say by now that Square's making a tradition of parodying monsters for special occasions.
